Whether you’re trying to be a bit warmer, look nicer going to and from the gym or get away with a shorter skirt than usual, it’s useful to know how to wear tights or leggings under a dress. For many women their legs are true assets so they must be used to add sex appeal to your outfit. This can be challenging as the weather gets cooler but they are the perfect solution to stay warm and maintain a sleek and sophisticated look. It’s a casual, fun and modern look that gives plenty of outfits a lot more mileage.
The first place to start when putting together a great outfit is, your tights must either match the colour of your shoes or the colour of your dress/skirt. For example if you are wearing grey skirt and black tights, wear black shoes. Or if your wearing a burgundy pumps and a navy skirt, wear navy tights. Some may think it look nice to match the skirt with the shoes but the rule of thumb is to match colours that are touching.
What NOT to Wear
- Avoid wearing tights with sandals altogether.
- Don’t wear socks over tights unless concealed with high boots. otherwise this should be left to the teenagers.
- Tights or leggings with 2 or more hues, tight or leggings with over bold patterns, tights or leggings that are too bright.
- Tights or leggings with any runs and holes.
- Never wear leggings that are the same colour as your skin; otherwise you will look naked and bigger than you actually are.
- Don’t wear tights or leggings that are too tight or too loose. Your leggings should be tight enough to snugly cover your legs, but not so tight that people can see every dimple in your legs. Make sure that they aren’t so loose that they start to bunch over your legs, because that isn’t very flattering either.
- Tights and Leggings are not replacements for pants, avoid “camel toe” and other fashion faux pas – See below
What to Wear
- Oversized top seem to rightfully be the most popular piece of clothing for wearing with leggings. First of all, it creates so-needed balance in a silhouette: skinny bottom and volume on top. Secondly, an oversized top that covers upper hips and your but.
- Choose thick, non-shiny fabric like a double knit or high grade cotton. This fabric will hide any unsightly bulges, not be see-though and not look cheap.
- Combine tights with high boots and a long blazer. This is a sharp and classy look but still very comfortable
- Mini to short mid length skirts look great with leggings because they allow you to display a fun, bright color while looking a little more modest than you would with bare legs. You can sit and stand more easily, without worrying about showing more than you’ve intended – See below
Therefore, if you rock ankle boots or up to the knee, slipping a pair of boots over leggings adds volume, balancing the figure and reducing the frump factor.
Finally some good advice, I am going to share this because there are a lot of girls and grown women out there who do not know these rules and I think they are crucial. LOL!
